In the untamed reaches of the 1800s, survival is only the beginning.

Cast ashore after a brutal maritime disaster, a half-Navajo man finds himself marooned on a remote island that should not exist-or at least, not in any world governed by natural law. The land is ancient, feral, and watching. Hunger, cold, and isolation test him daily as he struggles to build shelter, hunt and gather food, and endure the merciless elements.

But the island is not empty.

It is inhabited by beings whispered of in fireside legends-creatures older than history, bound to blood, shadow, and hunger. Among them stalk the skinwalkers; ruthless, shape-stealing predators that hunt not only the boday, but the spirit. Each night brings new horrors, each dawn fewer certainties.

As the boundary between myth and reality dissolves, the man begins to understand that he was not brought to this island by chance. His heritage binds him to forces long forgotten, and his survival may be tied to a destiny far greater-and more terrible-than escape.

To live, he must confront the islands monsters. To leave, he must confront himself.
